Bill Clinton was walking along the beach when he stumbled upon a Genie’s lamp. He picked it up and rubbed it and lo-and-behold, a Genie appeared. Bill was amazed and asked if he got three wishes.

The Genie said, “Nope…Due to inflation, constant downswing, low wages in third world countries, and fierce global competition, I can only grant you one wish. So…What’ll it be?”

Bill didn’t hesitate. He said, “I want to be remembered for bringing peace to the Middle East, instead of that other stuff with Monica, and Jennifer, and the rest of those women. See this map? I want these countries to stop fighting with each other.”

The Genie looked at the map of the Middle East and exclaimed, “Jeez, Fella! These people have been at war for thousands of years. I’m good, but not THAT good. I don’t think it can be done. Make another wish.”

Bill thought for a minute and said, “You know, people really don’t like my wife. Even though she got elected, they call her a carpetbagger. They think she’s mean, ugly, and pushes me around. I wish for her to be the most beautiful woman in the world and I want everybody to like her. That’s what I want.”

The Genie let out a long sigh and said, “Lemme see that map again.”

Hillary in Heaven

Hillary Clinton died and went to heaven. As she stood in front of Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates, she saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. She asked, “What are all those clocks?”

Saint Peter answered, “Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock.
Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move.

“Oh,” said Hillary, “whose clock is that?”

“That’s Mother Teresa’s. The hands have never moved indicating that she never told a lie.”

“That’s Abraham Lincoln’s clock. The hands have only moved twice telling us that Abe only told 2 lies in his entire life.”

An engineer, a physicist and a mathematician are staying in a hotel.

The engineer wakes up and smells smoke. He goes out into the hallway and sees a fire, so he fills a trash can from his room with water and douses the fire. He goes back to bed.

Later, the physicist wakes up and smells smoke. He opens his door and sees a fire in the hallway. He walks down the hall to a fire hose and after calculating the flame velocity, distance, water pressure, trajectory, etc. extinguishes the fire with the minimum amount of water and energy needed.

Later, the mathematician wakes up and smells smoke. He goes to the hall, sees the fire and then the fire hose. He thinks for a moment and then exclaims, “Ah, a solution exists!” and then goes back to bed.

A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. Because both had jobs, they had difficulty coordinating their travel schedules. It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day. Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. There he decided to open his laptop and send his wife an e-mail back in Minneapolis. However, he accidentally left off one letter in her address, and sent the e-mail without realizing his error.

In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister of many years who had been ‘called home to glory’ following a heart attack. The widow checked her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message, she fainted and fell to the floor. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
From: Your Departed Husband
Subject: I’ve Arrived!
I’ve just arrived and have checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

The foreman points out a huge pile of sand and says to the Italian guy, ‘You’re in charge of sweeping.’

To the Scotsman he says, ‘You’re in charge of shoveling.’

And to the Chinese guy, ‘You’re in charge of supplies.’

He then says, ‘Now, I have to leave for a little while. I expect you guys to make a dent in that there pile.’

So the foreman goes away for a couple hours and when he returns, the pile of sand is untouched.

He asks the Italian, ‘Why didn’t you sweep any of it?’

The Italian replies, ‘I no hava no broom. You saida to the Chinese a fella that he a wasa in a charge of supplies, but he hasa disappeared and I no coulda finda him nowhere.’

Then the foreman turns to the Scotsman and says, ‘And you, I thought I told you to shovel this pile.’

The Scotsman replies, ‘Aye, ye did lad, boot ah couldnay get meself a shoovel! Ye left th’ Chinese gadgie in chairge of supplies, boot ah couldnayfin’ him either.’

The foreman is really angry now and storms off toward the pile of sand to look for the Chinese guy …Just then, the Chinese guy leaps out from behind the pile of sand and yells…

Lupin has received Euro 20 million from Laboratoires Servier of France for the sale of additional patent rights to Perindopril.

Dr. Kamal K Sharma, managing director, Lupin said, “This income significantly boosts our performance for the current year. We are very pleased with the transaction and it goes a long way to further demonstrate our IP capabilities.”

Earlier this year the company had received euro 20 million (over Rs 115 crore) from Laboratories Servier of France towards the sale of certain patent applications and other related intellectual property for the generic version of high blood pressure drug, Perindopril to multiple countries.

Sources had said that although perindopril, as a chemical entity, came off patent in June 2003, its generic versions are rare in the global markets. Perindopril, marketed as Coversyl tablets by Servier, is a new class of cardiovascular drugs such as Ramipril and Lisinopril. Servier has taken four different “process patents related to the processes used to synthesize perindopril and its key intermediates”.

Servier is the largest independent French pharmaceutical company with a turnover of over 2.8 billion euros in 2004-2005. About 73% of the company’s turnover is contributed by drugs for cardiovascular and veneous diseases. Coversyl is the lead brand which contributes about 31% of its turnover.

Linux vendors Red Hat Inc. and Novell Inc. are being sued for patent infringement by IP Innovation LLC and Technology Licensing Corp.

The plaintiffs claim they own U.S. Patent No. 5,072,412 for a “User Interface with Multiple Workspaces for Sharing Display System Objects” issued Dec. 10, 1991, as well as two other similar patents. It is believed to be the first patent infringement lawsuit involving Linux.

Red Hat and Novell are accused of infringing on the patents by selling the Red Hat Linux system, the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, according to the lawsuit (PDF format) filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division.

The plaintiffs also contend that the defendants are deliberately and willfully infringing on the patents because they were previously notified of the infringement.

IP Innovation in Northbrook, Ill., and Technology Licensing are seeking an injunction from the court, damages, and “other relief that the court or a jury may deem just and proper,” according to the lawsuit. IP Innovation is a subsidiary of The Acacia Technologies Group, a division of Acacia Research Corp. that develops, acquires, licenses and enforces patented technologies. Based in Carson City, Nev., Technology Licensing is a company that acquires and licenses intellectual property primarily in involving electronics for the television industry, according to its Web site.

Attorneys for IP Innovation and Technology Licensing could not be reached for comment.

Google India, the Indian subsidiary of the world’s largest search engine, Tuesday launched the beta version of its short messaging service (SMS) for mobile users in India for accessing information on the move without an Internet-enabled phone or a computer.

The company said in a statement that through the service (GoogleT search), users could get business listings, movie show timings and more by sending a text message to 54664 from their mobile phones.

“The latest offering is part of our mobile strategy in the sub-continent, where text messaging has become a part of daily life. With mobile service providers adding over a million subscribers a month, we intend to offer them a quick and easy way to get the information from anywhere and anytime,” Google India products head Vinay Goel said.

The service is currently made available on Airtel, Aircel, BPL, BSNL and Reliance networks, with relevant local data for mobile users in Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Carriers’ premium text messaging rates apply.

To search through Google SMS, the user has to key in what the required information is. Users can also save time by identifying their locations, which will then be stored.

The company has an online demo on how to use the hi-tech service.

The humble charkha or spinning wheel, a symbol of Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience movement, will also generate electricity besides spinning cotton in a model developed by an innovator.

Hiremath, a Bangalore-based engineer who has been active in the field of non-conventional energy resources, has now customized the wooden Charkha into an `e-charkh’.

According to the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Pesident Pratibha Devisingh Patil will formally inaugurate the modified instrument Nov 19.

“The new charkha has maintenance-free lead acid battery fixed at its bottom, which functions as an inverter. Spinning the charkha for about two hours will give backup power for about six-seven hours of basic lighting and playing radio,” KVIC said Wednesday.

KVIC chairperson Kumud Joshi said: “The charkha will be a boon to the spinners, who would be able to experience the fusion of economic activity with the pleasure of music while working on the e-charkha.”

The cost of the model is approximately Rs.3,000. The KVIC is getting ready to induct 200,000 pieces of e-charkha at Khadi weaving centres across the country.

“Spinning of khadi yarn will no more be a monotonous work,” a KVIC official said.

Authorities said the effort would go a long way in providing electricity, entertainment and clothes to people in remote areas

Dr Craig Venter, the man who led the private sector effort to sequence the human genome, has been working for years to create a man-made organism. But constructing a primitive microbe from a kit of genes is a daunting task.

Dr Venter says, eventually, these life forms could be designed to make biofuels and absorb greenhouse gases.

The publication of the patent application has angered some environmentalists.

The Canada-based ETC group, which monitors developments in biotechnology, called on patent offices to reject applications on synthetic life forms.

The J Craig Venter Institute’s US patent application claims exclusive ownership of a set of essential genes and a synthetic “free-living organism that can grow and replicate” made using those genes.

It has also filed an international application at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) which names more than 100 countries where the institute may seek monopoly patents.

‘Gene kit’

Dr Venter’s team intends to construct an organism with a “minimal genome” that can then be inserted into the shell of a bacterium.

By removing genes, one by one, from a bacterium called Mycoplasma genitalium they identified the minimum number of genes required for this particular organism to replicate, or reproduce, in its controlled environment.

They have been able to remove 101 of its 482 genes without killing the bacterium, meaning that 381 were required for replication.

But generating a man-made living organism from the bottom up requires much more than just its minimal genome.

For example, in order to get the genes to do something, there have to be chemicals to translate the genes into messenger RNA and proteins.

Scientists around the world have been wrestling with the task of generating a so-called free-living synthetic organism for years.

Environmental objection

The ETC Group says it will be writing to Dr Venter asking him to withdraw his institute’s patent applications.

“We don’t want to engage in a long-term legal strategy to slap down bad patents. These patents must be struck down before they’re issued,” said Hope Shand, a spokesperson for the group.

Jim Thomas, of ETC Group, added: “These monopoly claims signal the start of a high-stakes commercial race to synthesise and privatise synthetic life forms.”

It said the company was pressing ahead with its work despite the fact the public had not had the chance to debate the “far-reaching social, ethical and environmental implications”.

Dr Venter maintains that artificial life forms could produce solutions to global problems such as green sources of fuel and climate change.

The effort could result in “designer microbes” that produce biofuels such as ethanol, and hydrogen.

They could also be engineered to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Dr Venter first announced that scientists were working on creating synthetic life forms at a conference in California in 1999.

The Wright Brothers were the two great inventors of the first controlled, heavier-than-air craft. Unfortunately for them, many other people made the same claim, or ignored their achievement.

Background

On 17 December, 1903, the Wrights managed to build a craft capable of heavier-than-air flight and applied for a patent. Over the years it took to grant this patent, they became obsessed with protecting their inventions. They designed parts of their craft to blend in with the sky and for years refused to allow photographs to be taken of it. They wouldn’t fly publicly until 1907, fearing that rival aviators would steal their patent.

Although they were the first to produce a controlled, heavier-than-air craft, they were by no means the first to try.

Samuel Langley, a one-time administrator for the Smithsonian Institute, used a great deal of the museum’s money to build a engine-driven, heavier-than-air craft that was large enough to carry a pilot. His final design, the Aerodrome A, was launched using a catapult from a houseboat near Widewater, Virginia. Unfortunately, the machine splintered and was useless, hitting the water, according to a reporter ‘like a handful of mortar’.

Octave Chanute, a long-time friend of the Wrights, also attempted flight. He would publicly defend them when organisations would later attempt to destroy their credibility.

Patent Granted

They were granted a patent on 22 May, 1906 to the great distress of much of the aviation community. Their patent included several specific things, such as their famous technique of wing-warping. It also patented lateral control – a concept so basic to flight that almost every flier that followed would have to pay the Wrights royalties… in theory.

From the start, Europeans completely ignored the rights of the Wrights and didn’t issue the patent in their countries. This meant that the French and the Germans were free to produce and sell the Wrights’ designs without any restrictions.

Meanwhile, in America, Alexander Graham Bell formed the Aerial Experiment Association on 30 September, 1907 in order to create a practical aeroplane. The Wrights respected Bell for his work with the telephone and trusted him not to violate their patents.

Violations

The AEA designed and built the Red Wing, which was in flagrant violation of their patents, but was not used for commercial purposes. It was tested on 17 March, 1908 and crashed into a frozen lake after travelling just 319 feet. It was wrecked, and the AEA didn’t attempt to repair it.

After this, the AEA produced a similar aeroplane called the White Wing which had similar limitations – it crashed a lot. The first real success of the Association was the June Bug. It was designed and piloted by Glen Curtiss – a long-time rival of the Wrights. It won a tidy prize from American Scientific Magazine for flying one kilometre in a straight line. The Wrights contacted the group and warned them that they were in violation of their patent for using their control systems for a commercial purpose.

They flew three more aeroplanes, the most successful of which was the Silver Dart, flown in Nova Scotia1. After this, the AEA disbanded. Curtiss joined an aviation enthusiast named Augustus Herring, who claimed to have patents from before the Wrights (this was, in fact a lie). They formed the Curtiss-Herring company.

The First Shots

Patent problems became heated in 1909. The Curtiss-Herring Company manufactured and sold an aeroplane called the Golden Flier to the Aeronautical Society of New York on 26 July, 1909 without paying royalties to the Wrights. This was the breaking point for the Wrights, who quickly filed two suits against Curtiss.

This matter could have been settled relatively easily, as the Aeronautical Society agreed to pay the Wrights. Curtiss, however, decided to fight for it.

The matter dragged on for several years. The Wright Brothers and Curtiss’s funds depleted and both unsuccessfully attempted to settle several times. The brothers were in great distress, and Wilbur died in 1912, at least partly due to the stress of these battles.

Finally, in 1913, the problem appeared to have been sorted. Orville won, and the courts ordered Curtiss to stop manufacturing aircraft in violation of the Wrights’ patents. Orville was also rewarded a small sum of money.

It Drags On…

Unexpectedly, Curtiss was encouraged by automobile maker Henry Ford. He had won a similar suit earlier and loaned the lawyer that had won it to Curtiss. He had a new angle.

If you remember, Samuel Langley had tried to produce a successful aircraft called the Aerodrome A which was launched from a houseboat. Curtiss’s lawyer attempted to explain that Langley was in fact the first to invent the aeroplane, although it was destroyed at launch. He tried to explain that Curtiss’s plane was designed after the Aerodrome A, not the Wrights’ designs. They rebuilt the Aerodrome A, falsely claiming that it was exactly how it was when Langley launched it. The court decided against this, but delayed the verdict. Legal battles started yet again.

However, the patent wars abruptly ended when another war known as World War One started. All patent litigations were ordered to stop immediately and royalties were reduced to 1%. Orville had previously demanded 20% royalties on essentially any controlled flying machine. The battles were set to resume after the war, but by that time, Orville had sold his company and retired.

Later, Orville would estimate the entire costs of the patent wars amount to around 150,000 dollars, a princely sum for that time period.

1 Incidentally, the first aeroplane flown in Canada was in violation of the patents of the Wrights.

Can’t afford a personal computer? If you happen to be a Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) customer in Mumbai and Delhi, you will soon be able to get a PC for as low as Rs. 4,500. This PC, is being offered by MTNL in partnership with Chennai-based Novatium and comes with an internet connection for a small monthly fee.

The finer details of the partnership and the offer price for the device are expected to be announced today in Delhi by the Communications and IT Minister, A. Raja. This computer, called netPC by Novatium, is a no frills device, this means, most of the common hardware that you find on any normal PC is absent here.

The terminals will be connected to a centralized server in the locality by MTNL and provide it with the internet service. The PC which looks and functions like any other desktop does not have a regular CPU or any storage devices. All applications, including the storage of data of all customers are done by the centralized server in the locality.

Novatium earlier undertook a small project in a south Chennai locality that provided all users to get a computing system with online software applications such as word, presentation tools, spreadsheets, surf the Internet, learn on education packages, play games and music online for a monthly fee. The software or applications are automatically upgraded by the company. Users are also given a memory space of 2 GB on the central server. The partnership with MTNL could be based on a similar model.
With regard to browsing the internet, common problems like the viruses, installation of different security software does not occur since connectivity to the World Wide Web is remotely managed by Novatium.

The Novatium website says, “The netPC reaches to your home on a network cable just like a cable television service or broadband. Metro-ethernet deployments are quickly becoming a pervasive reality, and hence instead of just the internet broadband to your home, one can ask for a complete desktop with inbuilt internet access, educational packages, online games, chat, webcam, productivity suites and much more only served on the Nova netPC.”

The netPC’s advantage is that its customers do not have to face the challenges associated with a regular PC. The unique selling proposition for this model is the low cost of ownership, low maintenance and only server end system upgrades.

Customers have the choice of using either Windows or Linux operating systems. Since the entire concept is routed through a centralized server, customers are saved the hassles of hardware and software costs as well as upgrades as these tasks are carried out centrally.

High cost of owning a full fledged PC is one of the biggest bottlenecks for the uptake of broadband services in the country. The MTNL-Novatium partnership is expected to bring down the upfront investment for the consumer taking a broadband connection considerably. So far, broadband growth has been sluggish with just about 2 lakh subscribers a month.
